Counting is a term used to describe the system you will use to keep track of whether the blackjack shoe has more high cards, or low cards or 7,8 or 9’s left to distribute. A shoe filled with 10 value cards increases your chances of winning, while a shoe filled with lower cards increases the advantage of the house. If you know the shoe is filled with 10 value cards, then you will want to increase your bet accordingly. Get aggressive, but not to aggressive since you are being watched. A sudden, very large increase in your bet will get the pit bosses attention and he will suspect you of card counting.

Card counting is a very good strategy to use when playing online live blackjack, or even blackjack in a land-based casino. In fact, it is a technique used almost solely with blackjack than with any other card game. However, if you are going to use card counting when playing blackjack, you have to remember that while it is not illegal to do card counting, you have to make sure that you will not get caught doing it. Otherwise, card counting will not work in your favor.

The most common mistake beginners make is to stand too often on their stiff hands (12,13,14,15, and 16). Players are naturally afraid to hit these hands because every one of them could bust (make a total of 22 or more) with a single hit. But when the dealer has a high card (7, 8, 9,10, or ace) showing, your best odds of winning come from hitting and giving yourself a chance of making a better total.

As a resident of Vegas, and frequent blackjack player, it was years before I ever bothered to learn basic strategy. I would lay down my money at the blackjack table and play using a rudimentary sense of the rules and a weak instinct for “the right move.” Over the years, I picked up basic strategy by playing next to players who were more disciplined and better educated at winning than I was. So before I ever picked up a book on basic strategy, I had a decent sense of how it worked.
